I have a wonderful book that teaches how to play hymns. It's by David Heller, and it presents hymns in a particular order. Each chapter of the book presents specific skills to learn followed by example hymns that require only the skills already covered in the book.
The way I see it, it's the only hymnal that organizes hymns by complexity rather than liturgical category. That means that if you play straight through it, you'll get a fun and strange mix of hymns from every season and Christian tradition. Here's hymn #1 in Heller's book! I think you'll recognize it 😉🎄
